Perle, the Prince of Darkness, is getting away with… well, with dodging accusations and not really coming clean. I don’t doubt that there’s something fishy here, but it’s not been proven– nor, I’m afraid, is it likely to be examined in any detail.

Not to defend Perle or prejudge his conduct in this conflict of interest story, but this article makes sound like Hersh is truly “fair and balanced”. It seems to me that the articles that Hersh has written recently are clearly intended to embarrass Rumsfield & Perle. I think Kurtz’s quote (“This is, at bottom, a clash between two old Washington warriors who have tangled over the years.”) is close to the mark. And if Hersh truly has the goods on Perle, then it’s a shame that his attitude has intruded on an important story.
I was happy to read Jane Mayer’s piece in last week’s New Yorker (“The Search For Osama”) in part because it did not come with the same axe to grind as Hersh’s have.
