Comments open for this post: which of the following motorcycles is cooler?
Triumph Bonneville
Honda 599 (“Hornet”)
BMW F650 CS.
I would probably buy used and in a different color so I am more interested in hearing opinions about body style and your affection for the brand.
Bonneville, baby. Bonneville for sure. Especially for city use – that faux-sport laydown on the Honda will get old reeeeeeal fast, maybe around the ninth stoplight. The bimmer is trying too hard to be a dirt bike, but come on…if you’re going to beat the hell out of a bike in the US, are you going to pay the scratch for a bimmer? Not unless yer posing.:-) Or unless you actually ride part of your commute on dirt.
Bonneville.

The Triumph. It has the best name, “Bonneville.” The others have numbers for a name … pffft. “Hornet” sounds like the marketecture department got ahold of it and found a pleasing name for North American focus groups. The Triumph looks the most “cafe racer like” which is always a good. Classic styling will persist far longer than the modern designs of the others.
The Honda reminds me of the Speed Triple from Triumph, but fails. Plus, it is liquid cooled, whereas the Triumph is air cooled. That will save you a few bucks on maintenance.
The BMW is typical BMW motorcycle ugly. Great cars, crappy bikes. It looks like it was meant for some futuristic, sci-fi, Jean-Claude Van Damme B-movie. Is it meant for off road or what? Who knows. Plus it is 10 HP less than the Triumph.
Definitely the Bonneville.

Definitely the Bonneville. There’s just something about a classic style that’s really appealing.
When I saw the Honda, I had a vision immediately of flying down the highway, which definitely could be fun. It looks very sleek, and my dad had a Honda bike when I was young and we enjoyed it, but I think jbz is right – that whole leaning forward sporty stuff will get old fast in Boston. Besides, if you use it in the fall to go look at leaves in the mountains, how are you going to be able to see anything good if you’re leaning forward?
The BMW is just plain ugly.
Not that you needed this advice, I think you’re already pretty sold on the Bonneville after our conversation last night at Charlie’s. =)

I know nothing about motorcycles and I don’t even particularly like them. But the Honda and the BMW look like the motorcyles bad guys drive in crappy action movies. So unless you can pull that off, I’d recommend the Triumph.
