Miguel points to George Clooney’s open letter defending liberalism.
I can’t say I agree with him.
We say “Progressive” now.

my dad has no problems with my actual views, and despite our supposedly opposed political alliances we actually agree on quite a number of political and philosophical attitudes.
we both favor intellectual and religious freedom, governmental restraint (in size, interference, and intrusion upon daily life), personal choice with personal responsibility, governmental and individual fiscal responsibility, separation of church and state, local business over large corp… the list goes on.
but his (and many older folks’) knee-jerk negative reaction to the term ‘liberal’ makes me pretty reluctant to use it, lest i be misunderstood as a taxing, spending, take-kids-from-their-families, government-running your-life, “won’t someone PLEASE think of the POOR LITTLE BUNNIES” bleeding heart. i was pretty shocked when i finally realized that all that really separates my dad “the republican” from me is … semantics.
maybe it really is time to officially adopt a new term. for both of us.

okay, so i used to have a crush on clooney back in his ER days and *gasp* Facts of Life days ’cause, gloriosky, was he cute. but damn, after his oscars speech i’m afraid my crush has turned into full-on i’m-going-to-leave-my-husband-to-stalk-him love. this just adds fuel to the fire.
i get so annoyed at people bitching about celebrities voicing their political opinions. somehow they lose their first amendment rights because they got famous? um, no.
now, if you’ll excuse me, i have some night-vision goggles to purchase. oh georgie…
